    Object Description

Staff with a open ring as finial and two sets of raised ridges around the shaft.

    Provenance

The staff was purchased from Udo Horstmann, a Swiss collector and dealer, who assembled the collection now owned by the JAG from sources in the USA, Britain, Europe and South Africa. In 1879 Field Marshal Francis Wallace, Lord Grenfell (1841-1925) was a Brevet Major in the 60th Rifles. He served during the Anglo Zulu War as Deputy Assistant Adjunct-General and Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General on Lieutenant-General Lord Chelmsfords Staff. He accompanied the 2nd Division on the march to Ulundi, and was present in the British square during the battle on 4 July 1879. Bought from Peter Miller, Cape Town. Possibly from Maria Stein-Lessing Collection
