The writing bureau of amboyna, ebony and stinkwood and ivory with silver escutcheons is believed to have been part of the possessions of the retired Cape governor Hendrik Swellengrebel ( 1700-1760). Distinguished features include a unique small door in the bottom section of the of the cabinet and it's inlaid baroque decorations that is unlike anything known in surviving Cape furniture.
The bureau is believed to have remained in the Swellengrebel family for 7 generations and was purchased by Andrew Ovenstone in 2008
