Jacobus Nicolaas Boshoff (1808 - 1881) served as an elder of the Dutch Reformed Church for many years. He moved from the Cape Colony to Natal in 1839. He was married to Adriana Petronella Gertruida van Aswegen (1811 - 1878) and they had eleven children. Boshoff was chairman of the Natal Volksraad and also the main compiler of the constitution of the Republic of Natalia. He was Landrost of Pietermaritzburg, registrar and master of the Supreme Court in 1845, and in 1855 he became the second president of the Orange Free State. He returned to Natal in 1859.
