    Object Description

Carved stone from the entrance to the Castle of Good Hope. One of the original carved stones from the pediment above the front entrance of the Castle. The carving is a symbolic representation of VOC sovereignty, appropriate to the level of power and control that was associated with the Castle at that time.

    Provenance

One of the original carved stones from the pediment above the front entrance of the Castle. The gateway was completed in 1684.
The gateway was built of stone and the pediment above it carved with a lion rampant beneath a large crown, the lion holding in one paw seven arrows symbolising the 7 provinces of the United Netherlands. A row of coats of arms represents the chambers of the VOC.
Monogram of the Company carved on either side.
New entrance was completed in 1684.
Above the gateway was added a bell tower, hung with a bell cast in Amsterdam and dated 1697.
