Distinguishing Features

The covering material is of a polished red leather, very thin and almost skiver-like. The surface of the leather appears to have been highly polished originally (an appearance that it still retains in many places, despite wear to the cover) and is a deep red / scarlet colour. The cover’s edges are turned in under the paste downs and are bevelled cut

Inscriptions
The cover has been written on the front board, with the name of the owner (Johannes Smiesing) and the date (1717) on the front and back boards, calligraphic flourishes are present with the writing on the front cover. The date on the back is written / drawn in a negative space manner (ie, “white” on black, but in this case the colour of the covering leather, red, is the “white”) – this appears to be hand drawn rather than stencilled.
