Longcase regulator, Victor Kullberg, London, no. 5366. It was installed at the Natal Observatory in 1884. It was electronically connected to the post office as well as the timeball where it served as the timekeeper for the Natal Colony and later the Union of South Africa. The Observatory closed down in 1911 and the clock was moved to the Union Observatory in Johannesburg where it was displayed in the library until the observatory closed down. Jacobus Albertus Bruwer (grandfather of the present owner) was the senior astronomer in Johannesburg and by the time of the closure of the observatory the regulator was deemed obsolete, along with other clocks and instruments. These were offered to the personnel who bid for the items and JA Bruwer purchased the regulator. There is no documentary proof to this effect.
