Proposal Description
HPU received a complaint from BGG stating that graves are disturbed and exposed without City Deep mine applying for permit. There was no public participation conducted and the grave site is not fenced.
On the 25/08/2020, the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) conducted a site inspection at City Deep/Ergo Mine in Gauteng Province following a referral from Burial Grounds & Graves (BGG) complaint. The HPU conducted a site inspection to assess the extent of damage to the City Deep graves.
The HPU had instructed the mine to demarcate the burial ground and put up signages on the site. The HPU was then notified that the fence and the signages have been erected.
