Permission for stabilisation and improvement of the 1995 underground staircase and lift at the Gladysvale site

The Gladysvale Metal staircase and pulley lift were installed under SAHRA permit by the co-permit holder in 1995 to allow safe access from the Upper Chamber into Lower Chamber 1 (See Figure 1) to bring some fossil bearing rock to the surface for preparation and examination. The staircase was designed and installed by mining engineers at the time and was heavily over-engineered. It consists of four sections with a single handrail. The metal stairs and pulley lift are attached to heavy “I” beams and these are secured to solid rock with a series of metal pegs and feet.
