Permit application for an exhumation and reburial of a grave, Mapungubwe National Park

A grave was discovered in 2020, inside one of the staff compounds at Mapungubwe National Park, and within a few metres of two entrance doors to sleeping quarters. There is nothing on the grave itself that enables one to know who may be buried inside the grave. Following an extensive social consultation process, the identity of the person has not been revealed. Due to the current location of the grave, and to give respect to the individual buried on site, the aim is to have the grave exhumed and reburied a few metres away, just outside the staff compound. No studies on the discovered human bones shall be undertaken.
