Harry Gwala Massification Irrigation Project - KwaSenti and Driefontein Sites

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform identified the need to provide massification irrigation for agricultural purpose within the Harry Gwala District Municipality, specifically within the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality. The proposed project will be run by the community with aid and assistance from the Department.

The project will take place in three area within the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, namely: Nguse, Driefontein and KwaSenti. Due to the spatial location of each of the three areas two separate Applications will be undertaken, as follows: one for the northern portion, the Nguse site and the other for the Driefontein and KwaSenti sites (which are located in the same ward). This Application is for the KwaSenti and Driefontein sites which is located within Ward 8 of the uMzimkhulu Local Municipality.

The proposed development entails abstraction and storage of water from watercourses for the purpose of agricultural mass irrigation. As such, pipelines and other associated infrastructure such as reservoirs and pump stations are proposed to be constructed.
