Proposal Description
Developing Genadendal heritage sites including the last resting place of historical figures, Genadendal's forgotten heroes. A search should be conducted to find the last resting place of Jan Paerl, the enigmatic rebel leader who took on the Dutch colonial invaders in 1788 in an effort to free his people, the indigenous Khoekhoe herders from South Africa. Also the last resting place of Karl Jonas the first locally trained teacher and indigenous person.
Genadendal, 140km from Cape Town in the Western Cape, is the oldest mission station in Sub-Saharan Africa and the first school for indigenous Khoekhoe.
