Zulu Kingdom Archaeology Project - 2022 Field Season

The emaKhosini has long been considered an area of historical significance to the Zulu people, the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and the Republic of South Africa. Previous research has focused upon the survey and excavation of king's capitals (uMgungundlovu), locating sites relevant to the development of the Zulu Kingdom, and battlefields and other locations associated with the Anglo-Zulu War. There has been few detailed or systematic investigations of many sites and little to no research conducted across the broader landscape to identify homesteads and resource locations. The objective of the research is to improve our understanding of agricultural and crafts production during the Zulu Kingdom, the relationships amongst capitals, homesteads, and the landscape, as each relates to the character of and changes in the operation of the kingdom's political economy.
