Proposal Description
The Anglo American Platinum Rustenburg Platinum Mines (Pty) Ltd (RPM) – Amandelbult Complex
(AMB) has been operating since the 1970s and is situated in the Thabazimbi Magisterial District, within
the Thabazimbi Local Municipality and Waterberg District Municipality and extends over some 20 km
from east to west. The mine is a wholly owned subsidiary of Anglo American Platinum Limited (AAP)
and is approximately 15 km north northeast of Northam and 30 km south west of Thabazimbi on the
northern limb of the Platinum Belt.
The AMB operates under existing approved Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs),
Environmental Authorisations, Water Use Licences (WULs) and Waste Management Licences
(WMLs).
AMB has identified several Stay in Business (SIB) and supporting infrastructure projects to assist the
mine in operating more efficiently.
The proposed project at AMB will involve the following supporting infrastructure and activities:
- Concentrator : The upgrading of the concentrator will increase the processing capacity of the existing concentrator to treat future mine arisings.
- Asbestos/potable water pipeline Tumela and Dishaba: The replacing of the existing asbestos cement (AC) potable water pipelines suppling Tumela and Dishaba Mines will improve reliability of supply and reduce water losses as this will reduce the amount of repair and maintenance required.
- Return water pipeline replacement: Replacing of the existing Holding Dam Return Water Pipeline will save water by addressing leaks and possible pollution from the leaks and also prevent possible and future contamination of the environment.
- Dishaba ventilation shafts: The construction of 2 ventilation shafts at Dishaba are proposed. This will provide a flow of air of sufficient volume for the progressing of underground workings and to regulate the temperatures.
- Dishaba Pipeline Upgrade at Dishaba 44 and 50: Replacement/upgrading of the Dishaba process water pipelines at Dishaba 44 and 50 decline shafts.
- Potable Water Reservoirs: Development of a potable water reservoir system and pipelines.
- Core Yard extension: Clearance of an area for the storage of drill cores created as part of continuous exploration activities.
- Decommissioning Projects: Decommissioning of Tumela 16W overland conveyor structure; Tumela 28W RB headgear, winder-house and conveyor structure; and Tumela 1Shaft overland conveyor structure.
- Golf course extension :Development of a driving range with a second tee box also proposed for construction.
