    Provenance

    In 1940, the artist Dorothy Kay was approached by the architects of the South African Reserve Bank building in Port Elizabeth, Jones and McWilliams, and commissioned to produce two paintings for installation in the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) branch building located on Market Square, North Union Street, Port Elizabeth. In 1943 the two paintings were installed in the newly built structure. The first, titled Commerce, is an oil on canvas painting installed on the ground floor.
