Donegal carpet design attributed to Gavin Morton c. 1900 of Mughal 'Leaf and lattice' design780 x 430cm
The design of the carpet is strongly influenced by Mughal Indian carpets of the Shah Jahn period of the 17th century, of lattice and flower pattern. It is not a known design by G Morton and therefore can only be attributed to him rather than confirmed to be by him. Morton did design some carpets of Persianate design but I have been unable to find any of a more Mughal feel. The label on the reverse is again very interesting but we are unable to substantiate any of the exact provenance and indeed, the label has been awkwardly cut and almost appears to have been resewn.
The carpet was sold at Volks Art Auctioneers in the 1970s and purchased by the current owner in 2010. Reputed to have been at the British High Commisson house in Pretoria but no evidence has been found to substantiate this claim.
