    Object Description

    REDUNDANT ASSET- The 8 Class consists of 13variations , 8 / 8W / 8A /8AW / 8B / 8BW / 8C / 8CW / 8D / 8DW / 8E / 8F / 8FW. A very similarl locomotive of this class - Locomotive 8D # 1200 is preserved at the Transnet depot, Salt River and forms part the Transnet collection. 4 other 8th class locomotives are plinthed with Municipalities whiles 2 other are on loan agreement to preservation clubs. The museum has two books where the history of this class is captured " Locomotive of South Africa" by Leith Paxton and David Bourne and "Railways of Southern Africa" by Jean Dulez. Drawings(plans) and other historical information relating to this class is in safe custody at the Transnet Heritage Library.
