Interim Comment
The SAHRA Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites (APM) Unit notes the pending heritage impact assessments. The assessment of the impact to heritage resources must comply with section 38(3) of the National Heritage Resources Act, Act 25 of 1999 (NHRA). The archaeological component, which will include a maritime heritage assessment, must be conducted by a qualified archaeologist and comply with the 2007 SAHRA Minimum Standards: Archaeological and Palaeontological Components of Impact Assessments.
The proposed development footprint is located in an area of very high sensitivity as per the SAHRIS PalaeoSensitivity map. SAHRA requests that a field-based Palaeontological Impact Assessment be conducted by a qualified palaeontologist as part of the proposed development EA process. The report must be conducted by a qualified palaeontologist and must comply with the 2012 SAHRA Minimum Standards: Palaeontological Components of Heritage Impact Assessments.
Any other heritage resources as defined in section 3 of the NHRA that may be impacted, such as built structures over 60 years old, sites of cultural significance associated with oral histories, burial grounds and graves, graves of victims of conflict, and cultural landscapes or viewscapes taking into account any visual impacts of the development on any significance heritage resources must also be assessed.
Further comments will be issued upon the receipt of the pending reports and the draft EIA inclusive of appendices.
