Dear Jaco
Please find attached the requested permit for the temporary export of the Copper Sheathing to the Industrie Museum, Germany.
The application is for the temporary export permit of Copper Sheathing found on the beach at Bushmans River Mouth in the Eastern Cape in May 2021. The sheathing is thought to have come from the nearby wreck of the Volo (1896). The makers mark on the sheathing indicates that it was manufactured in a particular area of Germany with the local museum being the Industrie Museum Kupfermuhle. The museum requested the temporary export of the sheathing for inclusion in their exhibit as it is the only known example of this object that was manufactured in the area it and would greatly add to their museum display. The motivation from the museum for the export of the object is set out in the supporting documents attached to the case.
The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage unit at SAHRA has on the 11th July 2022 taken the decision to approve the application for a temporary export permit of the artefact to Industrie Museum Kupfermuhle, through Iziko, for 5 years. This is subject to the terms and conditions set out in the attached permit (ID: 3599). The terms and conditions in the attached permit must always be adhered to. You are reminded that you must adhere to the provisions of SAHRA’s Wreck Resources Permit Policy at all times, and that the approval of this temporary export permit does not create a right or legitimate expectation to be issued a subsequent permit.
We wish you every success in this endeavour.
