Geological section along Bloukrans Pass, 22 km south of Calvinia. This covers the gently-dipping (< 5 degrees) Tierberg Formation and forms a reference stratotype. The site corresponds with the top of the formation and is located 1.4 km northeast of the top of the pass on the lower slopes of Kelderberg Mountain. Here, the first prominent sandstone of the Waterford Formation conformably overlies dark grey shale of the Tierberg Formation with a sharp contact. A reference stratotype is an essential component of a defined stratigraphic unit and this locality should be classified as a local heritage site. Grading by: DOUG COLE
