Statement of Significance

Unlike other graves in Phahameng (Bloemfontein), Motlhakwana’s grave is of heritage and cultural significance because of her role in the struggle for liberation in South Africa. Although she was not exhumed and buried in the newly established Heroes Acre as other liberation stalwarts in the Free State were, the grave itself is enhanced with a tombstone bearing the ANC emblem and colours. However, the proximity of this grave with those in the Heroes Acre makes it significant in the vicinity. Furthermore, the following reasons are advanced for the significance of her grave to be declared as a Grade II site:

Played a significant role as one of the stalwarts in the liberation struggle in South Africa (although her contribution was provincial);
Despite being a woman, Motlhakwana was instrumental in building the organs of the ANC in Bloemfontein, as well as the Free State at large. Therefore, her grave as one of the legacies of Motlhakwana, deserves to be declared a provincial heritage site.
