Statement of Significance

This U-shaped building was erected in 1849 as an officers' mess at a time when King William's Town formed the centre of the Frontier Wars and accommodated a large garrison. The building was used as a mess until 1884, after which it served inter alia, as a dwelling for the paymaster, the Inspector General and a military chaplain.
