Statement of Significance

The original two-roomed Van der Bijl cottage was built in c.1820, probably as a gardner's cottage. Although extended during its restoration in 1979/80 the building retains much of its original character and scale. As part of the historical Van der Bijl House complex the cottage not only forms an important and integral part of the aspect of this National Monument, but also contributes to the surrounding historical streetscape.
