Aalwyn BESS & Associated Infrastructure

The Applicant, Aalwyn Energy Facility (RF) (Pty) Ltd, proposes the installation and establishment of the Aalwyn Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Associated Infrastructure to accommodate the storage of excess energy/electricity during low demand time periods that will evacuate the stored electricity into the national grid, via the Mercury Main Transmission Substation (MTS), during high demand/peak periods for electricity use. The associated infrastructure includes an on-site substation, operation and maintenance
buildings, fencing and other auxiliary infrastructure. The Aalwyn BESS will connect to either 132 kV Impofu Substation (Grid Connection Option 1), or the 400 / 132 kV Ngwedi Main Transmission Substation (MTS) (Grid Connection Option 2). The capacity of the BESS will be up to 100 MW and is proposed to be BID as part of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) BID Window 2 for the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). The development is proposed on on the Remaining Extent of Portion 12 of the Farm Elandsfontein 102, Registration Division JQ, situated within the Rustenburg Local Municipality, Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.
