The Proposed Sandpan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Associated Infrastructure near Rustenburg, North West Province

Sandpan Energy Facility (RF) (Pty) Ltd, proposes the installation and establishment of the Sandpan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Associated Infrastructure to accommodate the storage of excess energy/electricity during low demand time periods that will evacuate the stored electricity into the national grid, via the existing Eskom 400/88 kV Marang Main Transmission Substation (MTS), during high demand/peak periods for electricity use.
The associated infrastructure includes an on-site substation, overhead power line, roads, operation and maintenance buildings, fencing and other auxiliary infrastructure. The capacity of the BESS will be up to 100 MW and is proposed to be BID as part of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) BID Window 2 for the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). The development is proposed on the Remaining Extent of Portion 52 of the farm Waterkloof No. 305, Registration Division JQ, situated within the Rustenburg Local Municipality, Bojanala Platinum District Municipality within the North West Province.
