Kinkelbos Poultry

The proposed development includes the implementation of an approximately 5-hectare (ha) chicken layer facility that will have the capacity to stock up to a maximum of 300 000 laying hens. The development will be situated along the National Route 2 (N2), opposite the Kinkelbos Police Station, approximately 50 km northeast of Port Elizabeth. Nieuwjaarskop (Pty) Ltd wishes to develop a poultry layer facility, specifically for the production of eggs, on their property located between Colchester and Nanaga, within the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality, Eastern Cape. The proposed development will cover a total footprint of approximately 6 ha and will consist of the following main components:
- Twelve (12) poultry houses, developed in a phased approach (each with a footprint of ± 1 000 m2)
- Production store including ablutions, changing room, offices and a canteen (± 450 m2)
- Loading pad (± 600 m2)
- A curve conveyor connecting the poultry houses to the production store / loading pad
- Incinerator for disposal of carcases
- Bio-secure entrance
- Access road from the existing farm entrance to the site (± 240 m)
- Water reticulation pipeline from existing reservoirs to the site (± 500 m)
- Water storage tanks, filtration system and pumps
- Septic tank with suction point for waste
- Stormwater catchment pond at the lowest point of the site The facility will be developed over four years (75 000 hens per year) with the aim to reach a total of 300 000 hens at full operational capacity. These hens are estimated to produce 56 000 dozens of eggs per house per month (i.e. a total of approximately 8 million eggs per month). Approximately 8 trucks per week will be required to deliver eggs from the proposed facility to various supermarkets.
