Good Hope Centre

The City of Cape Town, Strategic Assets Unit, is proposing to develop the site of the Good Hope Centre on Erf 161669, Cape Town and surrounding properties to revitalise the property and precinct. The current Good Hope Centre (Heritage Grade 3B) has been deemed non-compliant according to SASREA and NBR safety standards, halting the historic public use of the site and precinct. Intervention is essential and the cost benefit analysis for renovation of the Good Hope Centre has warranted the consideration of demolition as an option. It is proposed to develop the site in such as way as to revitalise the property and precinct, recognising the social historical significance of the site and its historic links to the surrounding heritage sites, such as the Castle of Good Hope, District 6 and Woodstock precinct.

A NID for this proposed development was submitted to HWC and seen at the HOMs held on 27 Nov 2023. The ROD received from HWC (28.11.23) requested an HIA including an AIA, Townscape and Built Environment Assessment and a Social Historical Study. The heritage process is currently in the HIA Phase 1 drafting phase and comment from SAHRA MUCH Unit is required prior to HIA Phase 1 submission to HWC, as per HWC request, to inform the archaeological assessment.
