    Proposal Description
Moedi Consulting Engineers on behalf of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality appointed Enviroworks, an independent Environmental Consultant, to submit an application for rectification in terms of the Section 24(G) Regulations (Government Notice Regulation 698 of July 2017) promulgated in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA), for the development of the Waste Water Treatment Plant discharge pipeline on Portion 98 of the Farm Biesjesvallei 149 IO, in Itekeng, North West Province.
The background to this application is discussed in the section below. Please note that this application is specifically for Phase 3, for the discharge pipeline which is explained below.
The sewer network of Itekeng comprises of a combination of a waterborne system, septic tanks, and pit latrines. The wastewater generated in Itekeng gravitates towards the Itekeng pumping station which is located on the south eastern border of the settlement. Accumulated wastewater is pumped from the pump station to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Oxidation Ponds. The WWTP has a daily capacity throughput of 500 m3.
The existing WWTP was constructed in 2013. The Itekeng oxidation pond system consists of three biological zones: Anaerobic zone, Facultative zone, and Maturation zone. The anaerobic and facultative treatment occurs within a single lined basin whereas maturation is facilitated in 6 unlined ponds. A capex construction project is currently underway and consists of three separate phases:
    Phase 1
    - The first phase entails the drainage of the anaerobic pond that is currently lined with a damaged HDPE liner.
    - A new concrete lining will be constructed on top of the existing HDPE liner to provide additional isolation.
    Phase 2
    - The second phase will entail the lining of each of the maturation ponds with concrete.
    Phase 3
    - The Itekeng oxidation pond system does not consist of a discharge line.
    - Phase three will entail the construction of an outfall sewer line that will discharge treated water into the Harts River approximately 2 km away.
Construction of the discharge pipeline commenced between June and July 2023. The construction on this WWTP will inhibit water to infiltrate ground water sources and will prevent future spillage of sewage by creating a discharge line.
