Proposal Description
Overlooked Colliery Alpha (Pty) Ltd (hereafter as Overlooked) operates Weltevreden Colliery, a mining operation that extracts coal through a combination of opencast and underground mining. Overlooked aims to extend its mining activities and increase its Life of Mine (LoM) by incorporating several properties situated adjacent to its current mining right boundary. Overlooked holds a Mining Right (MR) (Ref: MP 30/5/1/2/2/10087 MR) in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, Act No. 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) as well as an approved Environmental Management Programme Report (EMPR) dated 11 December 2008 at Weltevreden Colliery.
The proposed project entails a Section 102 Mining Right amendment (MP-00200-MR/102) for the inclusion of Portions 2, 4, 5 and 8 of the farm Weltevreden 193 IS, Portions 3, 5 and 6 of the farm Uitgezocht 194 IS, and Portions 3, 12, 14, 21, 22 and 23 of the farm Kafferstad 195 IS (ceded by Mandlaglo Commodities (Pty) Ltd) into the approved Overlooked MR (Figure 1). These properties, both existing and proposed, are situated within the Nkangala District Municipality’s Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Geographically, they are approximately 12km west-southwest of Hendrina, 28km northeast of Bethal, and 50km south-southeast of Middelburg in Mpumalanga Province.
