Proposal Description
The Applicant, Scatec Africa (Pty) Ltd, proposes the development of grid connection infrastructure to connect the Scatec Africa BESS Project (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/2949) currently undergoing authorisation and enable the storage and evacuation of electricity generated to the national grid via the Eskom Hermes 22/88/132/400 kV Main Transmission Substation (MTS). The grid connection infrastructure includes up to two 132 kV single or double circuit overhead power lines and a 132 kV substation. The town of Orkney is located approximately 11 km southwest of the proposed development and falls within the Moqhaka Local Municipality, Fezile Dabi District Municipality of the Free State Province, and the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality of the North West Province.
The proposed 132 kV power line will be up to 6 km long, assessed within a corridor with a 300 m wide expanding up to 2400 m wide at the Existing Hermes Main Transmission Substation (MTS) (and surrounding the existing Eskom powerlines) has been identified for assessment and for the placement of the grid connection infrastructure. The physical development footprint of the preferred grid connection corridor will be further reduced and restricted to power line pylon footprints only. The associated Grid Infrastructure further includes the development of an IPP step-up and Eskom switching/collector station within a 0.85 hectare area.
The entire extent of the development is located within the Central Strategic Transmission Corridor and the Klerksdorp Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ).
The grid connection corridor has been identified as the most feasible option due to the short corridor length and the specific connection point, the existing Hermes MTS, that must be utilised to connect into the national grid. The grid connection corridor is also determined based on the location and requirements of the proposed Scatec Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/2949), currently undergoing authorisation.
