    Proposal Description
Proposed Vessel Tracking System (VTS) Tower on Erf RE/10021, Port of Durban, eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu Natal.
Transnet has determined that the expansion of the Automotive Terminal onto the Ocean Terminal Pier can significantly increase automotive throughput and can be implemented through a variety of Port changes. The existing Vessel Tracking System (VTS) Tower is located on the roof of the Dumarine Building, which is located on the Ocean Terminal Pier. This building and other existing structures will be decommissioned and demolished to make way for the planned Automotive Terminal expansion. The VTS Tower would therefore need to be relocated. Following a site selection process and options analysis, it was decided that the VTS Tower would be relocated to Erf RE/10021 (approximate coordinates: 29°52'02.42"S 31°00'53.17"E), within the Port of Durban.
A VTS is used in Ports to monitor the movements and activities of vessels in real time. Vessel tracking is required to ensure efficient and safe maritime operations. The proposed VTS Tower will be placed on a lattice structure, which will be 42 m in height. The structure will not be attached to any building.
