Proposal Description
Barberton Mines, which forms part of Pan African Resources PLC, owns and operates the Sheba Mine near the town of Barberton in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The mine is operated under a mining right (Reference Number MP 30/5/1/2/2/10219 MR (189) MR)) and an approved EMPR, which was authorised by DMRE in August 2017.
Sheba Mine’s mining areas consist of underground mining sections and the removal of historical surface tailings. The underground infrastructure is extensive and dates back to 1886 when mining commenced. Underground gold bearing ore is mined through three operational adits and shafts. These include the ZK Shaft, Southwell and Edwin Bray adits. Historical tailings are removed and transported to Fairview Mine for processing as part of the Barberton Tailings Retreatment Plant (BTRP).
Barberton Mines wish to make changes to the mining right by adding a portion of the Farm Sheba Siding 939 JU (formerly Lot 162 Section A Kaap Block). This property has historically been part of the authorised old order mining right area (Mining License 29/2003) and this is indicated in the Regulation 42 Plan (OT5/3/2/590) of the converted new order mining right. However, this property was omitted in Annexure “A” to the new order mining right, indicating an administrative error. The aim of this amendment application is to rectify this administrative error and to align the Regulation 42 Plan with the mining right and Annexure “A” to the Sheba Mine mining right. In order to effect this change, it is necessary that a Section 102 template, accompanied by an environmental authorisation amendment application, are completed and submitted to the regulatory authority, the DMRE, for decision-making.
