National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (Pty) Ltd (Natref), a joint venture between Sasol Oil (Pty) Ltd (63.64%) and TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa (Pty) Ltd (36.36%), operates its crude oil refinery in Sasolburg. Natref is located within the Sasolburg Industrial area.
The refinery requires various infrastructure upgrades and reconfigurations to implement a Hybrid Refinery Flow Scheme (proposed project), to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Clean Fuels II (CF II) and the Biofuels Regulatory Framework (BFRF) 2020 regulations as its current flow scheme results in products that do not meet the required specifications stipulated in these regulations.
The refinery lies just east of the R57 and bound by Naledi Business Park to the north and the Eskom Coalplex Substation to the south. Natref’s refinery is located within Erven 8021 of Montrose No. 432 and Erven 8024 of Driefontein No. 2, Metsimaholo Local Municipality, which is part of the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, in the Free State province.
