Proposal Description
The applicant currently operates a fuel station at Portion 3 of Erf 5581 in Kroonstad, Moqhaki Local Municipality, Free State Province. Existing storage tank capacity is four (4) underground storage tanks of 23000 litres each. Total existing capacity is therefore 92000 litres for the site in the form of diesel.
Site was developed prior to NEMA coming into affect and so no EA is available for existing operations on site. The applicant wants to increase storage capacity with a planned future expansion of 37000 litres of underground storage. As the storage of a dangerous good can be considered a phased activity, the listed activity applicable to this project is Activity 14, (GN R.327), “the development and related operation of facilities or infrastructure, for the storage, or for the storage and handling, of a dangerous good, where such storage occurs in containers with a combined capacity of 80 m3 or more but less than 500 m3.
As there is already existing operations that are currently operational it is not foreseen that significant environmental impacts will occur with the proposed expansion. In addition, the applicant intends to install the additional tanks to the east of the exiting tanks and away from the drainage channel that is found to the west of the site.
