Proposed Development of the Rooikoppies BESS and Associated Infrastructure to be Located near Marikana, in the North West Province

K2024126924 (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd proposes the construction and operation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and associated infrastructure on Portion 208 of the Farm Rooikoppies 297 within Rustenburg Local Municipality, Bojanala District Municipality, North West Province, South Africa. The BESS will store and supply dispatchable energy as and when required by the off-taker.


The proposed project will include the following infrastructure:
A BESS with a capacity of up to 500 MWh, inside containers with a footprint of up to 5 ha in extent and a maximum height of 8m. Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System technology is being considered for the project.
Access roads to the BESS (8m in width) branching from the existing roads, and internal roads to be located within the total BESS footprint area.
Fencing around the BESS for increased security measures.
Temporary laydown area to be located within the BESS area.
Firebreak to be located within the BESS area.
