IMPROVEMENT OF N1 SECTION 29 TO KM70 NEAR MUSINA, VHEMBE DISTRICT, LIMPOPO PROVINCE

CES Environmental and Social Advisory Services (CES) has been appointed by Knight Piésold, on behalf of South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd. (SANRAL), to undertake the environmental services required for the improvement of National Route N1 Section 29 (N1-29), from Masekwaspoort (KM 26.5) to KM 70 near Musina. The proposed development project is located across the Makhado and Musina Local Municipalities of the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province. The project entails the following:
• Increasing road reserve to 30m – 35m road width where required;
Strengthening the existing pavement;
• General widening of the existing road cross section for 3.0m surfaced shoulders and climbing lanes where required;
• Vertical and horizontal geometric improvements;
• Widening of seven major and minor culverts and widening of three road bridges; • Widening of existing agricultural underpass;
• Possible horizontal re-alignment of the roadbetween KM27.8 to KM28.3 andsectionof R523; • Traffic accommodation for traffic during construction;
• Re-entry or opening of potential hard rock quarries and borrow pits;
• Stockpile areas and vegetation clearance outside road reserve in excess of one hectare; and • Relocation or protection of Baobab trees within the road reserve.
Drainage forms an integral part of the rehabilitation and upgrade design, and a summary of the existing drainage infrastructure is provided in Table 2.3 below. The initial assessments indicated that the existing side drains have insufficient capacity, which may be exacerbated by the provision of additional lanes. It is also assumed that the existing subsurface drains are not fully functional in some areas, and will thus requirereplacement, whichwill require relining or replacingand may involve pipe jacking.
