    Proposal Description
The Permo-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME) is regarded as the largest mass extinction in Phanerozoic history. Biodiversity studies over the last 20 years agree that present-day species loss rivals the PTME of the fossil record.
Our specific aims are: (1) Synthesize geochronologic age controls and identify the precise position of the Permo-Triassic boundary in South Africa’s Karoo Basin; (2) Identify shifts in ecomorphological and body size disparity within a novel high-resolution stratigraphic framework; and (3) Elucidate the influence of higher-level factors, such as food web structure on vertebrate biodiversity during the Early Triassic hyperthermal.
