    Proposal Description
Roosmaryn Trading (Pty) Ltd. intends to mine for Diamonds (Alluvial) (DA) & Diamonds (in Kimberlite) (DK) situated on a portion of the Remainder Extent of the farm Kareefontein 340 HO, Bloemhof district of 5 hectares in total. The alluvial diamond gravel will be mined over the whole of the application area.
The gravel is on average 1-1.5 meter thick with a topsoil layer which varies between 300 and 500 millimeters. The area that was identified and demarcated is shown on the attached sketch plan Figure 2. The gravel reserve on this 5 hectares is estimated at 50’000m³ or ±56’650 tons and the total material to be moved is 50’000m³.
‎The area will be mined through opencast excavations.
Vegetation cover will be stripped, topsoil layer will be removed and stored on the side of the excavation. Overburden will be stripped and placed on the side of the excavation. The diamond bearing gravel is then removed with a 30-ton excavator and placed next to the excavation and loaded onto a tipper truck and taken to the processing area where it will be put through a washing pan for processing. Rough out of the pan and over size stones will be taken back to the excavation for backfilling and the wet puddle will be pumped directly into open excavations. Overburden will be pushed back after wet puddle is dried out and lastly topsoil will be replaced after finale sloping has occurred. Diamond gravel will be sorted and recovered by hand.
At processing area: A Front-end Loader takes the gravel to the 14 feet washing pan which is fed at a rate of 6m³ an hour, 240m³ a day and 4’800m³ a month. All the rough are first placed back into the bottom of the excavation, hereafter the puddle out of the pan is pumped directly back into the open excavation. After the puddle dried off, the topsoil is put back on top again. The excavations will be 60m in length 10m wide and ±2.5 meters deep on average. It is estimated that four (4) of this excavation will be opened at a time.
The total estimated reserve of gravel is 50’000m³ taken at a production rate of 4’800m³ a month it will take 24 months to work the estimated reserve of ±50’000m³ and do final rehabilitation. The production rate is taken at 4’800m³/month. The gravel which is relatively shallow (1.5 meter), and the low production rate of the applicant make these 5 hectares to be worked sustainable over a period of two years.
