This project develops from an earlier project of mine which analysed pottery material using lipid residue analysis from 5 Early Iron Age sites in KZN. Here, I will produce comparable datasets to extend that research into the Later Iron Age and to different types of sites connected for foraging people. I intend to assess lipid remains from the Blackburn (i.e. early Later Iron Age) site, Mpambanyoni and from five rockshelter sites (Mbabane, Mpambanyoni, Umhlatuzana, Umbeli Belli and Mzinyashama No.1 Rock Art Shelters, to begin to assess forager-agriculturalist interactions during the Early and Later Iron Ages of KwaZulu-Natal.
