Proposal Description
The Nandoni Dam, located near Thohoyandou in Limpopo Province, is part of the Luvuvhu River Government Water Scheme, which utilises this natural water resource to supply bulk water to surrounding communities. The dam's construction was completed in 2004. Downstream from the dam's spillway, a drinking water treatment plant with a capacity of 60 Ml/d was built at an elevation of approximately 490 meters above mean sea level (mamsl) and finished around 2009. The treatment process includes chemical dosing, coagulation/flocculation, gravity settling (clarifiers), sand filtration, and disinfection with chlorine gas.
From the treatment plant, three pipelines originally supplied drinking water to three command reservoirs;
• NR5, via 7km 700mm ND pipe to Mavambe (5 Ml) at 561 m full-service level,
• NR6, via 11.6km 600mm ND pipe to Vondo (15 Ml) at 649 m full-service level
• NN20B, via 11km 200mm ND pipe to Vondo (1.5 Ml) at 645 m full-service level
The bulk water supply infrastructure was completed around the same time as the water works, and water demand has significantly increased since then. To meet this demand, the Department of Water and Sanitation has funded the construction of duplicate main supply pipelines and reservoirs. In the near future, the plant would supply water via a total of six pipe lines (three existing and three new) to surrounding communities as well as communities beyond the district boundaries, as far as Giyani (south-southeast) and Botlokwa (west-southwest). However, once the new supply lines are operational, the current water treatment works and clear water pumps will not be sufficient to meet the demand.
To address this, a new Module 2 with a capacity of 60 Ml/d needs to be constructed, increasing the overall plant capacity to 120 Ml/d. The existing plant will remain operational during the construction period. Temporary facilities will be established to maintain operations as much as possible during the works. The current Module 1 and other facilities will be reasonably maintained throughout the construction period and fully renovated, with minor upgrades, once Module 2 is completed.
