    Proposal Description
PGS Heritage has been appointed by Anglo-American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR), to affect the relocation of an accidentally exposed grave located on Portion 42 on the farm Waterval 303 JQ, within Rustenburg, North-West Province. This application deals with one (1) grave which has been affected by mining activities within the Anglo-American project area. The grave is to be moved to an existing formal cemetery. We will be assisted on this project by local service providers. The stakeholder engagement process, to identify the closest next of kin for the graves commenced on 14 February 2024. The Traditional Authorities were also consulted in the process.

The grave was partially exposed by RBMR when a trench was dug to a depth of approximately 1.7m that exposed the lower limbs of the individual in question. On 23 February 2024, a forensic skeletal analysis was conducted in order to assist with the biological profile to ease community engagement proceedings. During this analysis, it was estimated that the individual was a female of approximately 25 years old. Even with this information, the next-of-kin of the grave could not be identified within the provided timeline and to exhume and safely relocate the accidentally exposed remains the application process commenced.
