Proposal Description
Engie Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd (Engie) has appointed WSP Group Africa Pty Ltd (WSP), as an independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to re-submit an application for the registration of the Mokgopha Marang Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and related grid infrastructure on Portion 0 of farm Klipgat 281 JQ. The Facility is located approximately 9km north-east of the town of Rustenburg within Rustenburg Local Municipality and Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, North-West Province.
The process of registration is used when requesting registration in terms of the “Norm for the Exclusion of Identified Activities Associated with the Development and Expansion of Battery Storage Facilities in Areas of Low or Medium Environmental Sensitivity”. Registration in terms of this norm allows for the exclusion from the requirement to obtain an environmental authorisation from the competent authority for listed and specified activities identified in paragraph 3 of the Norm.
This Site Sensitivity Verification Report forms part of the Application for registration in terms of this Norm.
This exclusion will apply only to activities identified in terms of section 24(2)(a) and (b) of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), subject to compliance with the Norm for the Exclusion of Identified Activities Associated with the Development and Expansion of Battery Storage Facilities in Areas of Low or Medium Environmental Sensitivity, as set out in the Schedule, while the requirements of any other relevant legislation remain applicable.
A registration application (DFFE Ref: BESS/2024/NW/12) was submitted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) on 01 July 2024. However, the project was not registered by the DFFE.
