Proposal Description
In order to date the layers at Spitzkloof Rockshelters in the Namaqualand we need to use Uranium Thorium dating ostrich eggshell fragments. I would like to use 1-2 unmodified broken sherds, per context and send them to Princeton Univeristy. Dr Elizabeth Niespolo will then oversee the dating program. We tried to use OSL at the site but all the samples failed. This is our last hope to date the site. While the dating method is destructive, any unused fragments will be returned to the McGregor Museum. Each context has >50 and sometimes 500+ ostrich eggshell sherds so I would only be taking between 1 and 3% of the ostrich eggshell assemblage. Spitzkloof A 77 sherds, Spitzkloof B 400 sherds. I had approached Dr Pickering at UCT to use her lab but she is too busy to take on this project and so I need to use a North American lab.
