Khutala Irrigation Project

Seriti intends to undertake the relevant WULA and IWWMP processes in order to use mine water for Irrigation as it is often a cost-effective means for operating mines to manage surplus water and upon closure, thus irrigation may present a sustainable means for communities to diversify away from mining, by producing food and fibre sustainably, and creating employment. These processes will involve the compilation of the WULA for the proposed irrigation activities. An application for a Water Use Licence associated with the proposed development was submitted to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), Mpumalanga Region, Bronkhorstspruit Office.
Activities to be undertaken will involve the development of the Irrigation systems. Khutala is interested in the beneficial use of mine water for irrigation. This will form part of the sustainable development for developing crops within rehabilitated areas and effective management of mine-affected water. This project will be undertaken using a network of sprinkler irrigation methods within the identified areas and it will form part of the mine closure and final land use activities. The application process will include a compilation of the required WULA in terms of the NWA, GN R 267 and other applicable legislation.
