Proposal Description
The upgrading project is situated on the Provincial Road D3187 from Mageva (km 0.0) to Makhuva (km 29.0). The proposed route starts at Mageva, traverses through several villages of Ka- Gidya, Ka-Mbedlhe, Ka-Guwela, Ka-Kheyi, Ka-Mushiyani and ends in Ka-Makhuva and is located approximately 30 km south of the town of Giyani. With some parts of the road being gravel, approximately 12.0km, this attributed to Bus operators and Taxi operators no longer serving the community along the full section of the D3187 road, due to damage caused to their vehicles because of the quality of the gravel road. The gravel road also has inadequate drainage, with erosion being visible at numerous locations and expected to worsen during flood events should the issue not be appropriately addressed.
The proposed project will improve the road safety and allow for landscaping (improvement in the visual character of the road). This will result in higher-than-average increase in traffic on road D3187, because of better access, increased public transport supply due to the quality of the road and other economic spin-offs. The D3187 also provides a link between the R529 and the D3840 that links with Giyani, that implies that an increase in through traffic could be expected. Four (04) borrow pits, namely, BP1, BP2, BP3 and BP5 closest to the project have been identified as sources of construction material required for the upgrading of the D3187 provincial road. The selection criteria were based on a combination of distribution along the road, as well as other geotechnical factors such as topography and drainage.
