Proposal Description
The authorised 132kV Overhead Powerline spans approximately 13km through the town of Riebeeckstad located near the town of Welkom within the Matjhabeng Local Municipality of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality in the Free State Province.
Khauta West Solar PV Facility RF (Pty) Ltd obtained an Environmental Authorisation (EA) from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) on 02 February 2024 for the 132 kV Overhead Powerline as per DFFE Ref.:14/12/16/3/3/2/2834
The authorised 132 kV powerline will support the authorised Khauta PV SEF cluster of Energy Facilities. The Khauta PV SEF cluster of energy facilities received Environmental Authorisations (EAs) on 28 June 2023 from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) for the respective SPVs and associated facilities as follows:
• 165 MW Khauta North Solar PV Facility (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2221)
• 110 MW Khauta South Solar PV Facility (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2220)
• 80 MW Khauta West Solar PV Facility (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2219)
• 50 MW Khauta eNyane Solar PV Facility (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2218)
Electrical power generated from the Khauta PV SEF Cluster will be evacuated by the authorised 13 km 132 kV Overhead Powerline connection to the existing Eskom Leander Main Transmission Substation (MTS).
The Grid Connection infrastructure, EMPr and layout for the Electrical Grid Connection infrastructure were approved by the DFFE following the Basic Assessment process (Enviroworks, 2023). The Applicant further liaised with the technical team, Engineers, Eskom and the Contractor for the development of the OHL. Based on further detailed technical design and engineering consultation, potential optimisation in terms of the pylon positions within the assessed grid corridor as part of the layout optimisation.
