Proposal Description
A-Hub Energy (Pty) Limited propose to construct a Battery Energy Storage System on Portion 0 of Holding 33, Donegal Small Holdings, Bloemfontein. This project involves the construction of a 124MW/496MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system with a development footprint of 2.3ha. Overhead transmission lines (132kV) will be used to transmit electricity from the BESS to the Harvard Substation, supported by above-ground poles designed to meet local regulations and environmental conditions. The overhead transmission lines will be located in servitudes (10-15m wide). The powerline will be approximately 3km in length depedning on the final route chosen. The primary objective of the facility is to store excess energy generated by the Harvard Substation during periods of low demand and discharge it back into the grid during peak demand periods or grid instability. The proposed facility is located on agricultural land and is therefore highly disturbed by agricultural activities. The powerline route is above-ground and also passes through land used for agriculture. No buildings / features were noted during the site inspection and it is assumed that any palaeontological resources would have been disturbed by farming activities. The site is located within the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Free-State Province.
