    Proposal Description
The permit is for the export and destructive analysis of 51 paint samples collected from four rock art sites on two Eastern Cape farms in accordance with a sampling and analysis permit from ECPHRA. The samples will be shipped to the University of Sherbrooke (QC, Canada) where they will be analysed as part of my (David Witelson's) Research Internship under Professor Adelphine Bonneau. Prof. Bonneau is the leading expert in the chemical analysis of San rock art paints and she will train me. The rock art paint samples will be characterized following a protocol developed by Professor Bonneau (2016; Bonneau et al. 2012, 2014, 2017, 2022). It includes: polarized light microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy / Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). I will train to use these techniques as part of this project.
