THE DEVIATION OF SECTIONS OF THE AUTHORISED HENDRINA – PRAIRE – MARATHON 400KV TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECT (REFERENCE 12/12/20/915), WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF CITY OF MBOMBELA OF ENHLANZENI DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY AND EMAKHAZENI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY OF NKANGAL

NTCSA proposes Deviation of sections of the previously authorised Hendrina – Praire
- Marathon 400KV Transmission Line project (EIA reference 12/12/20/915). The
proposed deviations are located on the line between Gumeni and Marathon
substations. The proposed project consists of four (4) deviations:
• Gumeni deviation – (covering 4.3 km in length);
• Roodewal deviation – (covering 2km in length);
• Belmont deviation – (covering 1.2 km in length); and
• Marathon deviation - (covering 400m in length).
The total line length between Gumeni and Marathon is approximately 93 km. The
deviations cover a total area of 7.9 km will and a new servitude of 55 m wide will
be created to cater for this transmission line. The full length of the line runs parallel
to the Marathon – Prairie 1 and 2 275 kV lines.
The approved design of the proposed project includes the following:
• Phase Conductor: 3 x IEC 315 at 50deg C
• Tower Types: 529A/C, 515B, 515H and 515 strain towners (occasional use of
518H, 518C and 518D).
• Ground Clearance: 10m
