    Proposal Description
This research aims to uncover new archaeological material from sheltered sites in northern KwaZulu-Natal’s Coastal Hinterland, an area with known MSA occupations. Jojosi Shelter 1, rediscovered in 2024, offers a rare opportunity to study settlement patterns and lithic technology in both sheltered and open-air contexts. Surface surveys revealed numerous Stone Age artifacts threatened by erosion. A small-scale excavation is planned to recover and analyze material of likely LSA and MSA origin. Findings will contribute to broader research on technology, raw material use, and settlement dynamics of early hunter-gatherers.
