REFERRAL LETTER

The permit application in respect of the above, received and reviewed on 09 April 2025 by the KwaZulu-Natal Amafa and Research Institute (The Institute) refers.

Please be advised as follows:

  • The committee noted that the application was for 6 of the 25 graves as the balance were under 60 years of age.
  • The application, however, was found to be incomplete in that two IDs of family members and signed consent forms were not attached, and the consent of the Traditional Authority was not uploaded.
  • The attendance register of those who attended the community meeting was not uploaded.
  • The mapping of the positions of the graves was also not included in the documentation.
  • Umgeni Water had also not consented to the exhumation of all the graves.

The application was therefore referred.

FURTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Copies of the IDs of the representatives of the two families that had not been submitted.
  • Consent letters of all the families, the Traditional Authority and Umgeni Water.
  • The attendance registers from the community meeting.

Written responses/requests for reconsideration of the application or consideration of new information must be loaded to the case on SAHRIS (email [email protected]) within 30 days of the date of this letter or any requirements/decisions contained herein will be considered final.  Extensions of this time frame can be requested upon receipt of motivation.

Required additional information or revised drawings must be submitted within six months from the date of this letter or the application will lapse and a new application will be required.

THIS LETTER DOES NOT CONSTITUTE FORMAL APPROVAL OF THE PROPOSAL SUBMITTED TO THE INSTITUTE.  UNAUTHORISED WORK CARRIED OUT ON THE ABOVE SITE WILL BE IN CONTRAVENTION OF THE KWAZULU-NATAL AMAFA AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE ACT (5 of 2018).
